Self-care is essential, but many store-bought products come with a hefty price tag that can make pampering yourself feel like a luxury you can’t afford.
Did you know there are easy products like this vanilla sugar scrub that you can make at home for cheap?
Making your own body care products may seem complicated, but it’s actually incredibly simple—and you’ll save a ton of money in the process!
This DIY Vanilla Sugar Scrub is made from just four ingredients and will leave your skin feeling smooth, moisturized, and pampered—all without breaking the bank!
Benefits of Using a Sugar Scrub
- Natural Exfoliation: Sugar can create a nice exfoliating body scrub to gently remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and refreshed without harsh chemicals.
- Moisturizes the Skin: The olive oil in the scrub hydrates the skin, locking in moisture and preventing dryness.
- Boosts Circulation: The gentle massaging motion you use with a sugar scrub helps stimulate blood flow, giving your skin a healthy glow.
- Customizable Scents: You can easily switch up the scent by using different extracts, essential oils, or natural ingredients, allowing for a personalized spa experience.
- Affordable: Made with simple kitchen staples, DIY sugar scrubs are cost-effective compared to high-priced store-bought scrubs.
- Eco-Friendly: No need for packaging waste or harmful preservatives; DIY scrubs are made with sustainable, natural ingredients.
DIY Vanilla Sugar Scrub: Only 4 Ingredients For Self-Care!
I love body scrubs. They smell great, they exfoliate, and they leave your skin soft and smooth. I never realized you could make your own body scrub or how simple that process was.
And then, one day, I made my own homemade body scrub, and I loved it! So, I decided to whip up another batch and bottle it up as a crafty Christmas gift.
For the sugar scrub, you’ll need some white sugar and brown sugar (about one-and-a-half cups of each), some olive oil, and some vanilla extract (see recipe at the bottom of the entry).
You’ll also need a jar for storing it, to keep it moist and clean. You can use a wide-mouth pint-sized Mason jar or a hinged-lid jar like the one pictured here. Finally, you’ll need some cloth and a piece of ribbon.
Add equal parts white sugar and brown sugar until it fills your jar about half to three-quarters full.
Next, pour in some olive oil and mix it with the sugar until you achieve the desired consistency.
Packaging A Sugar Scrub Gift
Using a sharp pair of scissors or a rotary cutter like the one I used here (which works amazingly well, I might add!), cut a square of cloth to the size needed to cover the top of your container.
Instead of buying a whole yard of fabric, which is usually the minimum amount you can buy, you can save a few bucks by buying pre-cut fabric squares.
Once you’ve got the cloth on top and the ribbon tied, you’re ready to give a nice exfoliating scrub as a gift.
Like I said earlier, I used vanilla extract as the scent for this particular scrub, but feel free to use whatever extract you’d like for your own batch!

Ingredients
- 1.5 Cups white sugar
- 1.5 Cups brown sugar
- 1.5 Cups olive oil
- 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Mix equal parts white sugar and brown sugar (about 1.5 cups each).
- Add 1.5 cups olive oil.
- Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.
- Mix all ingredients.

FAQs
Is a sugar scrub good for all skin types?
Yes, sugar scrubs can be used on all skin types. Just adjust how often you use them and how much pressure you apply depending on how sensitive your skin is.
The pressure is a big thing- using too much isn’t good for your skin and can cause skin irritation or damage over time.
How often should I use a sugar scrub?
You can use a sugar scrub 2-3 times per week, depending on your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, once a week may be enough to avoid irritation.
Can I use a sugar scrub on my face?
Yes, but it’s important to be gentle. If you have very sensitive skin, consider using a finer sugar like brown sugar and avoid scrubbing too hard to prevent irritation.
How long will a homemade sugar scrub last?
Your scrub should last up to 2-3 months if stored in an airtight container. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent it from spoiling.
Can I use different oils or sugars in my sugar scrub?
Absolutely! Olive oil is great for moisturizing, but you can also use organic coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil (or non-organic ones; that’s up to you!) for different benefits and textures.
I suggest trying each one or switching off to give your skin different nutrition on and off.
For sugars, some people use organic cane sugar, only brown sugar, only white sugar- I like using a combination of regular white and brown sugar to have both hard and soft scrubbing power.
Can I use essential oils in my scrub?
Yes! Essential oils are a great way to add fragrance and extra skin benefits to your scrub.
Just make sure to use skin-safe oils and always do a patch test if you’re trying a new oil for the first time. That way you’ll know if you’re allergic or get irritation from certain oils.
