Using only a cast iron skillet, pan-fried tilapia fish can be the perfect fish dish made easy!
This blackened tilapia with mango salsa is a light dish perfect for spring. It seriously only takes about 10 minutes to make, and it is AMAZING.
I got the idea for this from a dish at a local chain restaurant. I liked the dish but didn’t like the $15 (plus tip) price, so I figured out a cheap and easy way to make it at home.
Here’s the recipe I came up with to make a restaurant-worthy gourmet meal at home for much less!
10-Minute Pan-Fried Tilapia Recipe: Budget Gourmet Meal
To start, heat your cast iron skillet with olive oil over medium heat.
This is how you can get the perfect pan-seared tilapia- any pan will work, too, but cast iron creates the best sear on fillets.
If you’re looking for an awesome cast iron pan, this is the one I use, and I love it!
While you heat oil up in the pan, season the tilapia so every nook and cranny is well coated.
The seasoning is also very easy. I used seasoned salt with a kick; my favorite is Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning.
I’ve seen people use Old Bay seasoning and fresh lemon juice, which sounds great, but I’m a big fan of some garlic powder and creole seasoning.
If you want your pan-fried tilapia to be a bit more spicy, feel free to add cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes as well.
After seasoning the fish, let’s prepare the mango salsa.
Chop the mangoes and pepper and place them in a bowl. Mix in the remaining ingredients.
Once the pan is hot and the oil is just about smoking, it’s time to fry fillets for dinner! Heat for 5 minutes total, flipping halfway through.
And if you want some ideas for sides, why not use the same cast iron skillet to saute green beans and brown rice? Simply saute the green beans for about 10 minutes before cooking the fish.
After the fish is done, toss some cooked brown rice in the hot pan and cook for about a minute, scraping up the seasoning and oil left in the pan from the fish.
Fewer dishes to wash is always a win for busy moms!
Serve the tilapia with the mango salsa right on top, with the brown rice and green beans on the side.
I thought this dish was so flavorful, and my daughters loved it too- though one did ask for tartar sauce on the side, so be weary that your kids may still want their usual fish dip, LOL.

Here are some fantastic options that will elevate your meal and add variety to your plate:
1. Coconut Rice
Coconut rice is a fragrant and slightly sweet side that pairs beautifully with the spicy and tangy flavors of the tilapia and mango salsa.
To make it, simply cook your rice in coconut milk instead of water and add a pinch of salt. For extra flavor, toss in some shredded coconut and a squeeze of lime juice before serving.
2. Grilled Vegetables
Grilled vegetables add a smoky and earthy flavor that complements the savory tilapia. Consider grilling bell peppers, zucchini, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes.
After grilling, season them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice for a fresh finish.
3. Quinoa Salad
A light and nutritious quinoa salad can be a great addition to your meal.
Cook the quinoa and let it cool before mixing it with diced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and fresh herbs like parsley or mint. Dress it with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper for a refreshing side.
4. Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Roasted sweet potatoes offer a sweet and savory contrast to the tangy mango salsa and the spicy tilapia.
Cut the sweet potatoes into cubes, toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of paprika, and roast them in the oven until tender and caramelized.
5. Black Beans and Corn Salad
This vibrant salad adds a burst of color and flavor to your plate. Mix black beans, corn, diced red bell pepper, red onion, cilantro, and avocado. Dress with lime juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
This salad not only complements the mango salsa but also adds a hearty and satisfying element to the meal.
6. Garlic Butter Green Beans
Garlic butter green beans are a simple yet flavorful side. Sauté fresh green beans in a pan with butter, minced garlic, salt, and pepper until they are tender-crisp.
The buttery garlic flavor complements the seasoned tilapia perfectly.
7. Cauliflower Rice
Cauliflower rice is a fantastic low-carb option to eat with fish dishes. Simply pulse cauliflower florets in a food processor until they resemble rice grains, then sauté with olive oil, garlic, and salt until tender.
Add some chopped cilantro and lime juice for an extra burst of flavor.
8. Pineapple Slaw
A tangy and sweet pineapple slaw can be a refreshing side dish. Shred cabbage and carrots and mix them with pineapple chunks. Dress with Greek yogurt, lime juice, honey, and a pinch of salt.
This slaw adds a crunchy texture and a tropical twist to your meal.
9. Avocado and Tomato Salad
An avocado and tomato salad is light and fresh, making it a great accompaniment for pan-fried tilapia. Slice avocados and tomatoes and drizzle with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper.
Add some fresh basil or cilantro for a burst of herbal flavor.
10. Cornbread
Oh man, I love good cornbread! It’s a comforting side dish that pairs well with the spicy and savory flavors of tilapia.
You can make it from scratch or use a mix for convenience. Serve warm with a bit of butter for a delicious addition to your meal.
FAQs
Can I use a different type of fish instead of tilapia?
Yes, you can substitute tilapia fillets for other white fish like cod, halibut, or catfish. Adjust the cooking time as needed since thicker fillets may take a bit longer to cook.
What if I don’t have a cast iron skillet?
While a cast iron skillet is ideal for achieving a great sear, you can use any heavy-bottomed pan. Just make sure it’s heated well, and be cautious about cooking times.
How do I keep my tilapia from sticking to the pan?
While you cook tilapia fillets, it can be hard to keep them from sticking. To help, make sure your pan is well-heated before adding the oil and fish.
Using a non-stick or well-seasoned cast iron skillet also helps, which is why I get out my trusty cast iron for fish recipes.
Also, avoid moving the fish too soon; let it cook for a couple of minutes until it naturally releases from the pan.
What is the best oil to fry tilapia with?
Olive oil is a great choice for fried fish as it adds flavor and has a moderate smoke point.
Other oils with higher smoke points, like canola oil, vegetable oil, or grapeseed oil, can also be used.
How do I know when the tilapia is fully cooked?
Tilapia fillets are done when they flake easily with a fork and are opaque in the center. It usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side for thin fillets.
Can I make the mango salsa ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare the mango salsa up to a day in advance. Just keep it covered and refrigerated until you’re ready to serve it.
What other sides can I serve with this dish?
Besides sautéed green beans and brown rice, you can serve this tilapia with a side salad, roasted vegetables, or quinoa.
The mango salsa pairs well with a variety of sides, adding a fresh and vibrant flavor.
