Steak and Potatoes

In today’s fast-paced world, finding the perfect balance between convenience and wholesome, hearty meals can be challenging.

Enter the slow cooker—an indispensable kitchen companion for busy individuals and families alike. It’s inspired me to make satisfying meals like this steak and potatoes recipe!

This Easy Slow Cooker Steakand Potatoes meal combines tender beef, perfectly seasoned potatoes, sweet bell peppers, and a medley of aromatic spices to create a comforting and nutritious dish.

Perfect for meal prepping or for those evenings when you want something homecooked without spending hours in the kitchen, this slow-cooked delight requires minimal effort but delivers maximum flavor.

So why wait? Dust off your slow cooker, gather your ingredients, and let’s get cooking! Your taste buds will thank you.

Key Takeaways

  • Cook Time: High – 4 hours
  • Main Ingredients: London broil (or another cut of beef), onion, bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, and more
  • Servings: 4
  • Extras: Add carrots, celery, or any other veggies you like to get more nutrition and flavor in your dish
  • Tip: You can use many cuts of beef with this recipe; less expensive beef can be tough, but you can marinate it overnight to absorb all the seasoning and get it ready to fall apart in the slow cooker

Easy Slow Cooker Steak and Potatoes W/  Peppers & Onions

Comfort food at its best!  This slow cooker recipe combines classic American meat and potatoes with bell peppers and onions for a satisfying and flavorful easy meal.

And don’t let the garlic and Worcestershire sauce fool you, kids love this dish! The bell peppers mellow out the savory flavors with their sweetness.

Plus, everything is cooked in one pot, making clean-up a breeze. Serve this dish on a chilly night for a cozy and comforting dinner.

I used London broil for this beef and potatoes recipe, but you could also choose to use stew meat or even smaller pieces of strip steak if that’s what you have on hand.

Beef can be pretty expensive, so you may as well use what you have on hand or can get on sale- because, of course, that’s what I do!

I suggest you marinate cheaper cuts of meat overnight so that they turn out juicy and flavorful. The slow cooker will do the rest and make the meat juicy and tender when cooked low and slow.

bell pepper beef and potatoes ingredients

This is a super dish to prepare when you have extra guests coming over because you can just throw in a few more potatoes to make the recipe serve more people.

When you place the ingredients in the slow cooker, try to arrange the potatoes on top. This will keep the meat marinating in the delicious juices and prevent it from drying out.

It also keeps the potatoes from becoming mushy and overcooked. If you’re dumping in the ingredients after freezing them, then you can gently move the potatoes to the top.

If you forget to do this, it’s not a big deal. In fact, it makes the juices more like a gravy.

The potatoes will be a little more crumbly and thicken the juices for a nice, savory sauce that you can spoon over the dish when serving.

Freezer Directions

If you’d like to prepare the recipe ahead of time, just place all the ingredients into a gallon freezer bag.

Lay the bag flat to freeze, and you’ll be able to store it for a few months.

When you’re ready for an easy dinner, just pull the freezer bag out the night before so the meat can thaw and cook evenly the next day.

Once it’s thawed, you can cook it just like I described!

Recipe Substitutions

This slow cooker steak and potatoes recipe is incredibly versatile. You can switch up the meat, vegetables, and seasonings to suit your taste preferences or dietary needs.

Adjusting ingredients based on what you have on hand or what’s in season will keep this recipe fresh and exciting each time you make it.

So here are some suggestions I can recommend with this recipe using different meats, vegetables, and more!

The Meat

Beef Chuck Roast

If you don’t have London broil on hand, feel free to use another cut of beef, like chuck roast, stew meat, or even larger pieces of strip steak.

Each option will bring its own unique texture and flavor to the dish. If the meat is tough, you can marinade it overnight or tenderize it a bit, but the slow cooker works wonders.

If you swap with ground beef, you are close to making taco meat, but not quite- but it could be a delicious ground beef recipe if that’s what you like!

Are you wondering if this recipe’s seasoning would work well with chicken or turkey in the slow cooker? The answer is a resounding yes!

The blend of garlic powder, white pepper, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and red pepper flakes creates a savory foundation that complements chicken and turkey.

For chicken, consider using boneless, skinless thighs for a juicier result, or breasts if you prefer leaner meat. Turkey thighs or breasts can be used similarly.

Just swap the beef bouillon or beef broth with chicken broth or bouillon for consistency.

The Veggies

For those looking to add more vegetables, consider incorporating carrots, parsnips, or celery for added nutrition and flavor.

Swap out the sweet bell peppers for other colorful options, such as zucchini or mushrooms, to diversify the taste and texture profile.

You can also mix in leafy greens like spinach or kale towards the end of the cooking time for an extra boost of vitamins.

The Seasoning

spice rack

Seasoning is where you can truly personalize this meal. If you prefer a spicier dish, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño.

For a more herbaceous flavor, try mixing in some fresh or dried thyme, rosemary, or parsley.

Dijon mustard, soy sauce, or balsamic vinegar can also be excellent additions to enhance the richness of your slow-cooked meal.

Serving It Up

Serving up your slow cooker steak and potatoes dish can be just as delightful as preparing it.

Start by ladling a generous portion of the beef, potatoes, and vegetables onto a plate, ensuring each serving gets a bit of everything.

The hearty mix of tender beef, savory potatoes, and colorful bell peppers makes for an appealing presentation.

Don’t forget to drizzle some of the rich, thickened juices over the top to enhance the flavors.

Pair this hearty dish with a green side salad to get some greenery if you like, or add some steamed broccoli.

A crusty loaf of bread or a bowl of fluffy rice can also complement the rich flavors and serve as a delightful way to soak up any extra sauce.

For a touch of freshness, sprinkle some chopped parsley or green onions on top before serving.

FAQs

What other vegetables could I serve with steak and potatoes?

vegetables

Vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, celery, zucchini, mushrooms, spinach, kale, or any other leafy greens you enjoy are endless possibilities for serving with beef and potatoes.

You can also mix and match different vegetables to add more variety to the dish.

Can I make this ahead of time and freeze it?

Absolutely! This slow cooker beef and potatoes recipe is perfect for meal prep, and you can freeze it in a gallon-sized freezer bag for up to a few months.

Just remember to thaw it before cooking according to the instructions. That way, the meat will cook evenly and thoroughly- let’s not have unsafe meat!

Could I use ground beef in this recipe?

While you could technically use ground beef, it may not result in the same texture and flavor as using cubed beef.

Cooked ground beef will give this a taco feel, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! We love tacos at our house, and new seasonings are always welcome.

Can I use a different type of meat in this recipe?

Yes! This recipe is highly versatile and can be made with various types of meat, such as chicken or turkey.

If you swap the meat, you can also use chicken broth or bouillon instead of beef to keep the flavor consistent.

Is it better to grill steak and potatoes?

Grilling steak and potatoes may result in a different flavor profile because of that good grilling char, but if it’s grilling season where you are, definitely try grilling this now and again!

I do a lot of slow cooker recipes so that ingredients can get dumped in, left alone for hours, and then it’s cooked and ready by dinner time.

I love not standing and cooking for 30+ minutes at the end of a busy day, but I do love grilling when I get the chance.

Final Thoughts

This slow cooker beef and potatoes recipe offers a comforting, nutritious, and highly adaptable meal for any occasion.

Its flexibility allows you to make it your own, whether you decide to experiment with different meats, add a variety of vegetables, or tweak the seasoning to suit your taste.

The ease of preparation makes it a perfect choice for busy days. With minimal effort, you can enjoy a delicious homemade meal.

Whether served with a side salad, crusty bread, or fluffy rice, this dish promises satisfying flavors and delightful textures every time.

Enjoy the easy process of making it, and most importantly, savor every bite!
