Rainy Day Activities For Kids

A young child wearing a yellow sweater looks out a rainy window, symbolizing fun and engaging rainy day activities for kids of all ages to enjoy indoors.

When it’s raining outside, it can be tough to figure out how to keep your little ones entertained and happy.

Here are some super fun and easy indoor activities that will not only keep the boredom away but also help you learn new things and spend quality time with your family.

1. Make Friendship Bracelets

Who says friendship bracelets are just for sunny days at camp? With a few simple materials like yarn or embroidery thread, your kids can create beautiful bracelets right at home.

When my kids make friendship bracelets, we start by cutting the strings to the same length. Then, we tie them together at the top and tape them down to a table.

Now, they can start the fun part—braiding or knotting the strings in different patterns. For younger kids, starting with 3 pieces of string and making braids is pretty easy!

2. Create A Sensory Bin

sensory bin

Creating a sensory bin is an awesome way for kids to have fun and explore on a rainy day! You can make one with items you already have at home.

First, grab a big container or box. Then, fill it with different materials like rice, beans, pasta, or even sand (homemade kinetic sand, too!).

My kids love adding small toys, spoons, and cups to scoop and play with. They can’t get enough of their sensory bins!

You can get creative and theme your sensory bin, too! Try adding plastic animals for a zoo theme or toy cars and construction toys for a construction site.

3. Paint A Family Flag

Painting a family flag is a super fun and creative way to spend a rainy day with the kids!

Start by grabbing some large paper or an old sheet, and set up a space where everyone can get a little messy. My kids love picking out the paint colors and coming up with ideas for our flag.

Think about what makes your family unique. You can paint your favorite animals, colors, or symbols that represent your family. Everyone can add their own touch to make it special.

If you don’t have an extra sheet, you can also use canvas to make a flag and hang it up inside for everyone to enjoy.

4. Bake Something New

family baking

Baking something new is a great way to spend a rainy day with the kids, and you’ll end up with a yummy treat!

My kids and I love picking out a fun recipe together. It could be cookies, cupcakes, or even homemade bread.

We gather all the ingredients and get to work. The kids can help with measuring, mixing, and stirring, and they learn a bit about cooking, too.

One of our favorites is making colorful cupcakes. We add food coloring to the batter to make it look like a rainbow or get a tie-dye effect.

5. Start A Scavenger Hunt

One of the most fun rainy-day activities our kids love to have is having an inside scavenger hunt.

Begin by making a list of items for your kids to find around the house. Some fun ideas include a red sock, a spoon, pipe cleaners, a toy car, or a favorite book.

Hide some of the items in fun places or come up with clever clues to make it more like a treasure hunt. My kids love racing around and figuring out the hints.

Once they’ve found everything, have a small prize or treat ready for them.

6. Do Karaoke At Home

kid sing karaoke

Who needs a stage when you’ve got a living room? Turn up the music and let your little stars shine with a home karaoke session!

This is a wonderful activity that allows your kids to express themselves and build confidence. You can make it even more exciting by incorporating games like ‘Name that Tune’ or a ‘Rock Star Sing-Off.’

Some of the girls’ older cousins have discovered YouTube, where there are videos with lyrics perfect for karaoke so everyone can learn the lyrics!

7. Build An Obstacle Course

Building an indoor obstacle course is a great way to keep your kids active and promote motor skills and problem-solving abilities.

You can set up the course using household items, masking tape, and cardboard boxes, adding challenges like jumping, climbing, and crawling.

I’m happy to let the girls use couch cushions, blankets, and stuffed animals, and I even let them use their mattresses when our power went out at one point, lol.

8. Try New Board Games

game-night-ideas

Trying out new board games is an awesome way to spend a rainy day with the kids. It’s fun, and you learn something new together.

Whether it’s a classic like Monopoly or something new we haven’t tried, unboxing a game is always exciting.

My kids enjoy spreading out on the living room floor, reading the rules, and diving in. We have a blast figuring out strategies and even making up our own house rules.

Our favorite activity from the last rainy day was learning how to play Sorry! It was a win-win for fun and learning, as it gave the girls a chance to practice their numbers and counting.

9. Alphabet Game

Playing the Alphabet Game is an easy and fun way to spend a rainy day with the kids, and it doesn’t need any special supplies!

To start, pick a category like animals, foods, or places. Then, take turns naming something in that category for each letter of the alphabet.

For example, if the category is animals, the first person might say, “A is for Alligator,” and the next person might say, “B is for Bear,” and so on.

You can also play the game by looking around the room and finding items that start with each letter.

10. Scrapbooking

family photo album scrapbooking

Rainy days are perfect for scrapbooking fun with the kids!

Get a scrapbook, glue, scissors, and keepsakes like old photos and drawings. Add stickers and colorful paper for extra flair.

Pick a theme, like a family vacation or a fun day at the park. Let the kids choose their favorite photos and place them on the pages.

11. Melt Crayons

Looking for a colorful way to spend a rainy day inside? Try recycling broken crayons into new shapes by melting them!

Gather old crayons, peel off the wrappers, and break them into pieces. Fill a muffin tin or silicone mold with the crayon pieces.

I got a couple of molds from Michael’s when I was a teacher to make some at school, and they were about $3 each on sale. I got hearts, strawberries, worms, and pumpkins—so cute!

Preheat the oven to 250°F (120°C) and bake for 7-9 minutes until melted.

Let them cool completely, then pop them out of the molds. Now, you have fun new crayon shapes for more coloring adventures!

12. Tie-Dye T-Shirts & More

tie dye

Bring some color to a rainy day with tie-dye fun! Grab some plain white T-shirts or any white fabric and a tie-dye kit. We had some totes and reusable grocery bags we did for something different.

Cover your workspace to keep it clean. I used a Dollar Store plastic picnic tablecloth, which I wipe off and reuse every time because it works well.

Twist, fold, or scrunch your shirts or whatever you’re dying, then secure them with rubber bands. Most tie-dye kits come with examples of cool patterns!

Mix the dyes and let the kids squirt their favorite colors onto the fabric. Let the fabric sit for 6-8 hours. Rinse out the excess dye and wash separately from your usual laundry.

13. Create Moon Sand

Making moon sand at home with the kids is a super simple way to keep kids entertained on a rainy day.

If you haven’t seen it before, it’s like a mix between homemade playdough and kinetic sand—soft and lush, it holds its shape, and then it’s stretchy and falls apart.

You only need two ingredients: flour and baby oil. To get neat colors, you can also use a little bit of food coloring but don’t add too much, or your hands will get stained.

Mix 8 1/2 cups of flour with 1 cup of baby oil in a large bowl or container. My kids’ favorite part is helping with the mixing part!

Once it’s all mixed, you’ll have a soft, moldable sand that feels like magic.

14. Learn To Solve Rubik’s Cubes

Solving Rubiks Cube

Make a rainy day exciting with a Rubik’s Cube challenge! Can any of you fix a Rubki’s Cube yet??

Get a Rubik’s Cube and find easy online guides or videos that show step-by-step solutions to get it back to rights. That’s how my husband learned, and the girls like trying it now and again.

A Rubik’s Cube keeps both younger and older kids engaged and boosts their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.

Start with the basics, like solving one side. It might seem tricky, but with practice, anyone can master it and increase their skill level. Then maybe try some of those crazy Rubik’s Cubes with holes in them!

15. Movie Marathon

What’s better than cozying up with your family and watching your favorite movies? A movie marathon with an indoor picnic can be a perfect way to spend a rainy day indoors.

We try to have our weekly movie night, but a whole day to binge our movies? That’s a rare treat and one we all look forward to!

Whether it’s a Disney+ marathon or a series of your favorite animated films, a movie marathon can provide hours of entertainment and bonding time.

16. Do Makeovers/Spa Day

family spa day

Turn your rainy day into a day of relaxation and pampering with a home spa day. Your kids will love getting makeovers and trying out different beauty treatments.

Plus, it’s a fantastic way to teach them about self-care. You can even create a full spa experience with relaxing music and healthy snacks.

I’ve started buying face masks to stow away for rainy days and new nail polishes to try, and it’s something I really look forward to with my girls!

17. Keepy Uppies (Bluey Balloon Tennis)

Keep the kids moving with a game of Keepy Uppies, also known as Bluey’s version of Balloon Tennis. This game is fun and encourages hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills.

You need only a balloon, and the goal is simple: keep the balloon from touching the ground. It’s super fast-paced, addictive, and gets everyone moving.

My kids love trying to beat their own records for how long they can keep the balloon up. Plus, it’s a great way to burn off some energy without needing much space or any special equipment.

18. Make Sculptures Out Of Modeling Clay

kid clay

Give your kids some modeling clay and watch their creativity take off!

They can shape the clay into animals, cars, or anything they dream up, helping them use their imagination and build fine motor skills.

Working with clay is also a great sensory activity. Kids will love the texture of the clay as they squish, roll, and mold it into different forms, seeing their creations come to life right in their hands.

Then they can decide to let it harden and keep their creations forever or mush it back and save it for another day.

19. Grow Plants Indoors

Bring a touch of nature indoors with some indoor gardening. It’s a fun and educational way to teach your kids about plant growth and responsibility.

They can grow herbs on a windowsill, start seeds in eggshells, or even create mini terrariums. Watching their plants grow will give them a sense of achievement and responsibility.

Plus, if you grow veggies and fruits, it’s their chance to learn about farming and sustainability- growing their own food so young!

20. Pillow Forts

kid fort

Building a pillow fort not only provides a cozy nook for your kids to play in but also encourages problem-solving and teamwork.

They can build their fort using pillows, sheets, and chairs, adding their favorite toys and books for a personalized touch.

But let me tell you, if they’re going to ask you to come and read to them in it, you have to set some ground rules about how much space an adult needs, lol.

21. DIY Jewelry

Making jewelry is one of my favorite ways to keep the kids busy when we’re stuck inside. We grab some colorful beads, stretchy string, and safety scissors to get started.

They love making bracelets, necklaces, and keychains with all sorts of fun patterns.

For a cool twist, we sometimes use buttons or pasta shapes. It’s a fun activity that also helps with their fine motor skills.
