Do you ever feel like life’s so busy that keeping your home tidy feels next to impossible?

I know I have! Between work, kids, and everything else, cleaning is the last thing you want to do when you come home.

Dirty dishes are stacked up, things are out of place, and it’s easy to feel things are slipping out of control.

With a few simple changes, you can keep your home tidy without adding more stress to your day.

Making these changes will help you keep things under control and give you more time for the stuff that really matters – like enjoying time with your family!

  • Start small with daily habits: Doing small things like making your bed or wiping down the counters can make a huge difference over time.
  • Tackle one room at a time: Breaking things down into smaller chunks, like focusing on one room per day, will make it easier to keep your home tidy.
  • Clean as you go: Whether it’s putting away shoes or wiping up spills, taking care of messes right away helps prevent clutter from building up.

Easy Daily Habits to Keep Your Home Tidy

1. Keep it simple with a cleaning routine you can stick to.

Cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. My secret? Keep it simple and tackle a little bit each day.

I used to get so stressed trying to clean the whole house in one day, but then I realized I didn’t have to clean it all in one day.

So, I started doing a few things at a time and spreading them out over the week. And you know what?

Keeping the house tidy is so much easier when you do a little every day instead of cramming it all into one weekend.

Need a little extra help? Check out the free cleaning schedule I use every day! It stays tidy when you’re doing a little bit every day instead of trying to do it all in one weekend.

2. Make your bed when you get up—it makes a big difference!

Bedroom Cleaning Checklist

Making your bed when you get up really makes a big difference! It’s one of those small habits that helps keep your home tidy without much work.

In just a couple of minutes each morning, your bedroom will feel tidy, and that little win can really kick-start your day.

I used to think, “Why bother? It’s just going to get messed up again,” but once I started making it up every morning, it made the whole bedroom feel more organized.

Give it a try—you’ll love how it makes your bedroom feel!

3. Empty the dishwasher from the wash the night before.

Emptying the dishwasher from the night before is an easy way to keep your home tidy right from the start of the day.

I used to put off emptying the dishwasher. I’d tell myself I’d do it later, but guess what would happen! The kitchen would look like a mess because I had nowhere to put the day’s dirty dishes except in the sink and on the counter.

Now, here’s what I do – empty the dishwasher while my morning coffee is brewing.

It only takes a few minutes, and once the dishwasher is empty, there’s a place to put dirty dishes during the day—no more sink and counter full of dirty dishes.

It’s one of those little habits that makes a big difference and doesn’t take a lot of time to do each day.

4. Focus on cleaning one room a day.

How to Deep Clean a Bathroom

Cleaning the whole house at once? No thanks. I used to do it that way, but let’s be real—that’s just exhausting!

Now, I stick to one room a day – maybe it’s the bathroom, living room, or kitchen. Cleaning just one space makes things more manageable.

Plus, when you only focus on one room, you can really get into the details without rushing.

It’s a great feeling to know that, by the end of the week, the whole house has had some attention without it taking over your entire weekend.

5. Pick things up as you go and put them where they belong.

Picking things up as you go and putting them where they belong is such an easy way to keep your home tidy without a ton of effort.

Instead of letting things pile up, take a second to grab those toys or put the dishes in the kitchen.

You can even get the kids to help by having them take their toys or shoes when they go to their room.

Why not try making it a habit when you’re heading from room to room—just grab something and put it back where it belongs?

It’s a small, simple thing that makes a big difference in keeping your home tidy and saves you from a big mess later!

6. Get a load of laundry done each day.

Laundry can pile up FAST! I used to leave it all for the weekend, and then I’d spend hours trying to get it all done.

Now, I try to do one load every day. It might be a quick load of towels or a mix of clothes, but getting it done daily means I’m not drowning in laundry come the weekend.

It’s amazing how much easier life feels when you’re not staring at an overflowing hamper.

And the best part? With smaller loads, folding and putting things away is so much easier.

7. Clean up spills as soon as they happen.

Spills are going to happen, especially with kids around, but if you clean them up right away, it prevents stains and keeps your home looking neat.

Plus, it’s so much easier to deal with a fresh spill than letting it dry and become harder to clean later. It also saves you from having to do a big clean-up at the end of the day.

If you stay on top of the small stuff, it doesn’t turn into a bigger problem later.

Just grab a paper towel or cloth, wipe it up, and you’re done in seconds!

8. Take care of the mail every day.

open mail

Mail can pile up so fast, and suddenly, you’ve got a whole mountain of envelopes staring at you.

I used to let it sit for days (or weeks—oops), but now I make it a habit to sort through the mail daily.

I toss the junk, file (or scan) the important stuff, and take care of anything that needs my attention now.

By dealing with it right now, you don’t miss important bills or let paperwork get lost in the shuffle.

9. Put your shoes and coats away when you walk in the door.

One thing I’ve noticed is that clutter seems to start at the front door. Shoes, jackets, and bags get dropped and left there.

Make it a habit to put things away as soon as someone come in—shoes go in the closet, coats get hung up, and bags go where they belong.

It takes just a few seconds, but it really helps keep the entryway tidy. Plus, it makes it so much easier to find things when you’re rushing out the door the next day!

10. Spot mop any spills or stains.

mopping

Instead of waiting for your designated “mopping day” to clean up spills, I’ve found that spot-mopping them as they happen is a total game changer.

Keep a mop or a wet cloth handy, and if something spills, clean it up right then and there. That way, stains don’t set, and the floors stay cleaner longer.

It’s such a simple fix, and it means you won’t dread mopping day as much because most of the heavy lifting has already been done throughout the week. Win-win, right?

11. Wipe down the counters each day.

I don’t know about at your house, but in our house the kitchen counters can get messy fast.

That’s why I make it a habit to wipe them down several times a day. It’s amazing how much cleaner the whole kitchen feels when the counters are cleared and wiped down.

And—wiping down the counters takes just a few minutes, but it makes the kitchen feel so much more put together. Plus, it keeps crumbs and spills from getting out of hand!

12. Give the fridge a quick wipe when needed.

clean fridge

Refrigerators can get messy fast, especially with kids grabbing snacks all the time! Every few days, give the refrigerator shelves a quick wipe-down. It’s way easier than letting spills sit and harden.

By keeping the fridge clean, I find it easier to see what we have, so I’m not wasting food or buying things we don’t need.

Plus, there’s nothing worse than trying to clean sticky, old spills after they’ve been there for weeks.

13. Clean the stove after you’re done cooking.

Stove splatters happen—especially if you cook a lot. Instead of letting them sit and harden, start wiping down the stove right after you are done cooking.

It only takes a minute, but it saves so much time and effort later when you’d otherwise have to scrub.

It’s way easier to deal with spills right after dinner than to face them days later when they’ve turned into a sticky mess. Plus, it keeps your kitchen looking cleaner between deep cleans.

14. Wipe the table after every meal.

Wiping the table after every meal is such a simple habit, but it makes a huge difference in keeping your kitchen looking tidy.

After everyone’s finished eating, grab a cloth or sponge and give the table a good wipe-down.

Not only does this get rid of crumbs and sticky spots before they turn into bigger messes, but it also makes the room feel instantly cleaner.

Plus, if you do it right after the meal, it becomes part of the routine to keep your home tidy and never feels like a big chore.

15. Run the dishwasher before bed.

Running the dishwasher before bed makes the next morning so much easier! It’s one of those little habits that helps keep your home tidy.

Instead of waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes to load in the dishwasher, wake up to a clean kitchen and clean dishes.

Plus, it’s so much easier to unload it in the morning and keep the kitchen tidy throughout the day.

And who doesn’t love starting the day with a clean kitchen? It’s a small win that sets a positive start to the rest of the day.

FAQs

What’s the best way to stick to a simple cleaning routine?

The best way to stick to a simple cleaning routine is to start small and keep it easy. Instead of trying to clean everything at once (which can get overwhelming fast), just focus on a few things each day to keep your home tidy.

You know, like making your bed in the morning, wiping down the counters after meals, or doing one load of laundry. When you break it up like this, it’s easier to keep your home tidy without feeling like you’re constantly cleaning.

Also, don’t stress about making things perfect—just aim to be consistent. You can use a checklist or printable to help remind you of your daily tasks that keep your home tidy.

How do I keep my kitchen tidy when I’m short on time?

Keeping your kitchen tidy when you’re short on time is all about quick, easy habits. Clean as you go—wipe down the counters while you cook and toss scraps right away. And instead of letting dishes pile up, pop them in the dishwasher as you use them.

After each meal, tackle one quick task, like wiping the stove or clearing the table. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just a few minutes here and there will help keep your home tidy, even on your busiest days!

What can I do to prevent clutter from building up throughout the day?

The best thing is to put stuff back as you go. Instead of letting things sit around, just pick up and put away what you can as you go from room to room.

Maybe you’re heading to the kid’s room, grab those toys, and put them where they belong. It’s super easy and makes a big difference in keeping your home tidy.

Another thing that helps me is to do a quick 5-10-minute tidy-up at the end of the day. I’ll set a timer, and we all pitch in for a few minutes—it’s wild how much gets done.

Final Thoughts

Weekly Cleaning Checklist

Your home sometimes gets messy, and that’s okay! The goal isn’t to have a perfect house 24/7 but to make things manageable so you can actually enjoy your space.

A few simple habits go a long way in keeping your home feeling calm and clutter-free without much fuss.

The more small changes you make, the easier it’ll be to keep your home tidy, and you’ll have more time to focus on what really matters.

Remember – you got this, Mama!
