That’s how I ran into the idea of having a bed canopy to spruce up my room.
Unfortunately, when you start “adding to cart” all those dreamy accessories, it can add up and you might find yourself quickly out of budget!
This happened to me, and so I decided to DIY it. Follow along with my canopy bed tutorial, where I made this stellar focal point in my room for under $70!
Key Takeaways
- Decorating inspiration can often be found on home makeover shows and Pinterest.
- Purchasing all desired decor items can quickly exceed budget limits.

- A bed canopy tutorial can create a stunning focal point for a room for under $70.
How To Make A DIY Bed Canopy With Curtains
I re-designed my bedroom for under $125! Today, I wanted to show you how I made these canopy bed curtains for around $70.
This was the major expense in my bedroom re-design, but it is also the focal point of the room.
I was inspired by some pins I saw on Pinterest and immediately had some ideas to run with.
1. Shopping List
- (4) Sheer White Curtain Panels – 63″ long (these are used on the ceiling part of the canopy) – $20 (I purchased my panels years ago at BigLots for $5 each)
- (4) Sheer White Curtain Panels – 84″ long (these are used on the wall part of the canopy) – $20
- (3) Curtain Rods – ones that will extend from 48″ to 84″. – $30 ($10 each from Walmart)
- Set of White Garden hooks need 3 of them) – $1
2. Hang the Ceiling Rods
I used the white garden hooks to hang the curtain rod from the ceiling. These easily screwed in and kept the rod secure and safe from falling.
This is where you will hang the (4 63″ long panels from to start. Make sure that you place one garden hook at each end. Add another in the middle to keep it sturdy.
3. Mount the Wall Rods
Next, I used two different since curtain rods on the wall. First, we mounted the bigger one and then added the second one behind it so it would hide the seam between the two curtains.
4. Hang Your Panels!
You will want to hang the end of your 63″ curtain panels on the smaller curtain rod, and then you will want to hang your 84″ curtain panels on the larger rod so that there is no gap between the two.

5. Finishing Touches
I found this flowered mirror on clearance for only $10. I spray painted it before securing it to the wall using a picture hanger. Then, once I knew it was in place, I gathered the curtains around it so you could not see the gap.
The final cost of this project, including the mirror, was $81 – not too shabby! (I purchased my comforter set on sale on Amazon a few years back, but it’s still available!)
FAQs
Can I customize the color of the curtain panels to match my room decor?
Yes, you can choose curtain panels in any color or pattern that best fits your room’s aesthetic.
I like the sheer white because it can go with multiple colors and lets in the light so well, but I know it can show staining or discoloration over time more than other colors.
Darker colors or thicker fabric will block light, but if that sounds good to you, go for it!
How long does it take to complete this DIY bed canopy project?
Depending on your level of experience with tools and the size of the canopy you’re making, this project can take 1-3 hours, including shopping time.
Is this bed canopy tutorial suitable for any size bed?
Yes, you can adjust the length and number of curtain panels to fit any size bed. Just make sure to measure and purchase enough materials accordingly.
With DIY projects, I tend to buy extra just in case and return whatever doesn’t end up being used. Just save those receipts!
Is it safe to make a bed canopy for a kid’s bed?
Yes, as long as the materials are installed securely and properly, a kid’s bed can be safe. It’s always important to prioritize safety when working on any DIY project!
Using secure curtain rods means they can’t yank bed canopies off the wall, making their bed a fun and safe special space for them.

I love your paint color in this picture!! can you please share what it is? Thanks awesome job!
Great work on the descriptions… Very easy to follow.
Are these easy to take gown & wash?
This is so pretty.
Thanks for sharing.
Did you use all 8 curtains? Where are they placed? I guess I’m just a bit confused. Are all four curtains of each size placed of the respective rods?
Yes, you put them all on and bunch them together.
This is great and I am going to do this, but I don’t understand why the smaller curtain rod is needed. What do you mean by “hide the seam between the two curtains”? Do you tuck in the shorter/ceiling curtain? Also, how far from the wall did you hang the curtain rod on the ceiling? I have really tall ceilings so I will likely have to make some adjustments. Thank you for your tutorial. It’s the closest thing I could find to what I’m looking for.
